A Quick Guide to Log Home Construction
Out of many building materials, wood is among the most classy and it makes a home look and feel natural. Wood is very trendy today because of its rustic feel and it makes a house extremely impressive when the d?cor and lighting are matched well. One of the most sought for wood designs for homes are logs. They are creative and make a home exceptional and breathtaking when completed. Below are the elements you must put in mind when planning to construct a log home:
The type of logs to use
Logs come in three different categories; milled, hand-hewn, or scribed. Milled logs are usually alike because they are passed through a machine. They can be square, round, rectangular or ‘D’ shaped. They are easy to stack and have a near precision joinery. They are mostly derived from pine and cedar trees, and are kiln-dried to reduce the moisture in them.
Hand hewn logs are developed using hands to enhance their look and feel of a vintage home. They take time to craft and can be provided either chopped or peeled. They are stacked together, and then the gaps between them filled up in a process called chinking.
Scribed logs are developed with hands too, and they are not chinked. Instead, the region where the two logs come into contact with each other is traced and eliminated with a saw. Their length is generally maintained as that of the natural tree.
Your home’s design
Log houses are elaborate, thus they need to be well outlined to guide their construction and also evaluate the other elements required like their cost, materials, etc. You can either consult an architect to design the home for you or you can go with preferred plans you have seen elsewhere. The best thing about dealing with architects is that they can double up as supervisors for the project. If you do not have an architect to oversee the building, the staff you hire must be experts in the area to ensure you get what you are looking for.
The things that will affect your budget for your log home are; size, type of logs selected, and workforce. Again, if you will require the home designed by an architect or the construction overseen by an architect, your prices will shoot further. Make sure you alert your architect about the amount you are willing to spend so that they can plan a home whose that you can fund.
The location of your site
The area where you intend to develop your home can either be in rural or urban regions. Ensure that you confirm with your county government the respective licenses you will need for the structure. Based on the utilities around you, make arrangements for any additional amenities you will need like boreholes, electricity, etc.
